Get Active Locally

Is there a way to get involved that isn’t politics?

Always!

I am already a busy mom how do I fit this in?

By being selective! You can’t do it all. Find the spot that makes you feel like you are making a difference in your kid’s daily life. It could be PTA or just volunteering for a role at school. Or like me, you just take the time to connect with neighbors.

I am an introvert is this for me?

Some spots will completely suit you. The other thing to remember is that as an introvert sometimes you can do amazing extroverted-looking actions if you have quiet alone time before and after.

I don’t want to knock on doors or call people can I still be active?

Yes, just ask for a role that suits your skills. Campaigns for local candidates and issues are almost completely run by volunteers so there is no shortage of tasks or needs.

Political campaigns are testing a lot of ideas that don’t involve calling or knocking because those methods aren’t as effective as they used to be so you can certainly find ways to get involved. Talking to friends and family is more impactful than hearing from a stranger.

During the last campaign I worked on I worked on the email correspondence team. Look for and ask for unique opportunities that will make you feel like you are making a difference. That feeling of making a difference is what will give you hope.

How do I decide what to get involved in with my limited time?

Tell me what keeps you up at night. Whatever that answer was is what you should get involved in. My answer is knowing my daughter is safe at school. That can be the safety of entrances at the school or keeping her safe with her food allergies. That is what I spend my time on when I feel like it is limited.
