Why flowers are the best way to meet your neighbors

Me: “Hello, I just gave my daughter peanut butter and she has hives all over her body.”Nurse: “Do the hives feel hot?”
Me: “I don’t know she is in the tub”

That’s when I hung up and dialed 911 and in a calm, yet frantic tone, asked them to send help for my 9 month old daughter.

She was fine that day and we have managed her life-treating allergy for years now.

One other thing changed for me that day. I now find it hard to give food to anyone if I don’t know their food allergy information.

Being a food allergy mom changes a lot about your life. Most unexpected was my hesitancy to bake some chocolate chip cookies for the neighbors.

That hesitancy helped me see that flowers are the perfect ice breaker for meeting neighbors. Here’s why…..

  1. who doesn’t love flowers?
Someone might dislike the raisins in your oatmeal cookies and the cookies may go stale sitting on the counter. The odds are slim that someone won’t admire your flowers while they are sitting on the dining room table.

  2. gifts of time make the biggest impact
Nothing says I care about this relationship like a gift that took you hours, or month to bring into this world. Sure beats a plate of nicely arranged Oreos that say hey I stopped by the store real quick.

  3. spring & summer are the best time to meet neighbors
Ever moved to a cold part of the country in the fall or winter? If you haven’t what you need to know is that by October you start to see less and less of your neighbors. It makes developing a relationship tough. Meet them just as they are eager to get outside for spring on the other hand gives you months to nurture that relationship. Also plenty of opportunities to drop off bounty from your garden.

  4. flowers rarely cause serious illness
Someone may have some allergies and start sneezing at the sight of a lily. They are unlikely to be physically ill, need a hospital visit, or risk relapse because the bottle of wine was too tempting. - Please be aware of who you are giving edible or alcoholic gifts. They can have an extremely negative impact.

  5. people think gardeners are impressive
Drop off some flowers and people will immediately have an easy conversation starter with you. They either also garden and want to talk shop or they don’t and want all your tips. Either way they will be impressed and think you are cool and worth knowing.
