3 things to know before you give food & beverage

I had a boss that used to give magnums of beer to every employee. Because he liked them and it seemed cool to him. Unfortunately, I didn’t care for that beer at all so this expensive gesture was did nothing to build our connection.

I had another boss that loved Shiraz wines. I am not a fan. This boss, however, picked out a wine he knew I would like. It made me feel like I was a valued part of the group.

The goal of a gift should be to create a stronger connection between you the giver and the receiver. So while food and drink may seem like an easy option it may not be the best option for that goal. If you don’t care about building that connection consider if you need to give that person a gift at all.

3 things to know before you gift food & beverage

Do they drink alcohol?
I am not sure there is a more awkward situation in gift-giving than giving a sober person alcohol. Just ask if they drink. You don’t need more details than that. Maybe they don’t drink for religious reasons, diet, or sobriety. It doesn’t matter. It only matters that you ask and are considerate.

Do they have food allergies?
If you know they have food allergies it is best not to give them food. Not food you baked, not food you bought, no food. If you don’t know if they have food allergies or diet restrictions ask. If you are set on getting them food. Ask what their favorite candy or treat is and get that very specific unopened item.

Do they like this food?
As my example showed a food and beverage gift can either be really thoughtful or it can be a big miss. Ask some simple questions before you give them your favorite food.

The best thing to remember when giving a gift is this is for them not you. Wanting to share your favorites with them to create a connection is fantastic. Just don’t use a gift-giving moment to do it. Share a small amount with them a few weeks before if they love it you will know exactly what to give them.
